Histories for USS Kitty Hawk - CV 63

fire # 1 Main Machinery Room Dec 73
I was in sleeping compartment for X-Divison on 03 level at night trying to splice a broken cassette tape. Over the 1MC came the fire alarm for a class B fire in the #1MMR. The speaker was LCDR Buck, our officer from the ship's 3-M Office who had bridge watch that evening. He was nervous. Informed us that if the fire was not out within 60 seconds general quarters would be called. I thought it an odd event and became anxious. One minute later GQ was called and I went to the route to my damage control station which was one of the hanger bays. The ladder down had a huge blast of hot wind blowing up and a stream of guys coming up. I think that I was confused and took the wrong route. Immediately thereafter there was a couple of communications on the 1 MC asking for certain sailors to report immediately to muster stations and also for non-engaged dc party members to report to the flight deck for muster. I saw Lt Turner there who asked me what happened and why I was there. I told him. The ship was listing and they were flying the birds off. The next day there were huge piles of OBAs piled up on the 2nd deck with melted bladders, shattered and melted face mask lenses. Shortly after that a friend of a friend who was a snipe refused to re-enter the lower spaces. I thought that we verged on serious problems with non-rates refusing to re-enter the lower spaces due to the recurring fires and demoraliztion problems. We were towed from about half way to the PI from Hawaii to Subic Bay.
